About Eyelid Surgery

As we age, collagen production decreases which can result in sagging skin (ptosis). Hormonal changes and sun exposure can also age your skin. (1) If you are struggling with tired eyes, the good news is that it does not have to be permanent. Eyelid surgery is a popular procedure that transforms your eyes in just a few hours and helps you achieve smoother skin with long-lasting results. There are several different types of eyelid surgery depending on your needs:

  • Upper blepharoplasty: An upper eyelid procedure is for people who have drooping skin over the eyes. We can easily remove it to help you see more clearly.
  • Lower blepharoplasty: A lower eyelid surgery is commonly used to remove puffiness under the eyes (“eye bags”). This procedure will help you look more awake.
  • Quad blepharoplasty: Patients can elect to have a complete eyelid surgery procedure or either an upper or lower eyelid procedure. If you struggle with excess skin and fat around the upper and lower eyelids, we can eliminate it in one appointment.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

The benefits of an eyelid surgery include the following:

  • Look younger
  • Appear more awake
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Enhance field of vision
  • Long-term results
  • Fast recovery
  • Discrete, hidden scars
  • Improved symmetry

Eyelid Surgery Candidates

The best candidates for eyelid surgery usually have drooping skin or excess fat around the eyes. If you have noticed sagging skin that affects your ability to see clearly, eyelid surgery is the most effective option. In a recent study, 70% of blepharoplasties were performed for functional reasons. (2) The best candidates are usually:

  • 35 years or older
  • Physically healthy
  • Genetically predisposed to developing ptosis

If you have glaucoma or a detached retina, you will need to see your ophthalmologist to determine whether or not this is the best surgery for you. If you struggle with dry eyes, a thyroid condition, a cardiovascular disease, circulatory conditions, or high blood pressure you may not be the best candidate for eyelid surgery.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Davoudi will discuss your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate. He will also examine your eyes, perform a vision test, and determine whether an upper, lower, or quad blepharoplasty will help you meet your goals. Please come prepared to have a discussion about your lifestyle and allergies.

Preparing for Eyelid Surgery

To prepare for your eyelid surgery, you will need to stop taking blood thinners 1-2 weeks before the procedure. If you smoke, you will need to stop for 6 weeks prior to the procedure. You will also need to arrange to take time off of work and for someone to drive you home after. Planning your meals ahead of time will help you have a smoother recovery because you can prevent trips to the store.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Eyelid Surgery, Blepharoplasty, Dr. Morgan

During an upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Davoudi will make a discreet incision along the crease of the eyelid. The location and length of these incisions are strategically planned based on your unique eye structure and desired outcome. He will then remove excess skin and fat, and tighten underlying muscles if necessary. He will then carefully suture the area and close the incisions.

During a lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Davoudi will make an incision to remove the excess fat. Depending on the chosen technique, he carefully places incisions either inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival) or just below the lash line (subciliary). The procedure can take 1-2 hours depending on the type of eyelid surgery you need.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

We will apply eye dressings and/or cold compresses immediately after surgery to help reduce swelling and support the healing process. You should keep these bandages intact for the prescribed duration. It’s crucial to get plenty of rest during the first week of your recovery. Avoid strenuous activities or heavy lifting until cleared. Keeping your head elevated when resting can help reduce swelling.

Your recovery from eyelid surgery will take approximately 2 weeks. After 2 weeks you should be able to return to work. As you recover, the scars will fade into your skin and should not be noticeable.

Eyelid Surgery Results

The results of your eyelid surgery will not only be long-lasting, but easy to maintain with proper skin care. You can enjoy a wider field of vision without droopy skin obstructing your eyes and you will look more refreshed. Many patients love how awake they look and notice that they appear younger after removing the excess skin and fat pads that cause puffy eyes.

Corresponding Procedures

Eyelid surgery reduces sagging skin and excess fat that causes a tired look. However, it will not address crow’s feet, dark circles, or facial wrinkles. If you are interested in eye rejuvenation procedures, we have several corresponding treatments that can help you meet your goals.

Brow Lift

A brow lift is a procedure that removes excess skin from the forehead and eliminates wrinkles and fine lines in the upper third of the face. Fine lines can change your outward demeanor and result in an angry or annoyed look. A brow lift can help your face look rested and well-balanced because it reduces the appearance of harsh lines. During the procedure, Dr. Davoudi will make a small incision along your hairline to reposition your skin and restore your youthful appearance. Most patients who have a brow lift are between the ages of 40 and 60. This is the best procedure for moderate to severe wrinkles that are too deep to address with our medspa services.

Face Lift

A facelift is a procedure that repositions the skin on your face to reduce the appearance of droopy jowls, fine lines, and wrinkles. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a discrete incision along your hairline behind your neck or behind your ears. He will lift the skin to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles so you can enjoy a younger complexion. A facelift is similar to a brow lift, but it targets a different area. After a face lift you will no longer need to worry about droopy jowls. If you have hollowed cheeks, we can restore the volume of your face with injections. Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

A nose surgery reshapes the cartilage and bones in your nose for a smoother look depending on the shape you wish to achieve. If your nose is not proportionate to your body or draws attention, Dr. Davoudi can rebalance your features. Thousands of patients have experienced the benefits of the procedure and improved the shape of their faces with rhinoplasty.

Blepharoplasty is generally well-tolerated by patients, and discomfort during or after the procedure is typically managed with medication prescribed by your surgeon. The discomfort experienced after the surgery usually subsides within a few weeks.

When can I wear makeup after blepharoplasty?

Your surgeon will provide you with specific guidelines regarding when it is safe to start wearing makeup following your blepharoplasty procedure. Generally, you should avoid applying makeup directly to the incision sites until they are fully healed to minimize any infection risks.
